Frequenty Asked Questions

Will handmade goat’s milk soap be gentle to my skin?

Yes! The reason Handmade goat’s milk Soap is gentle to the skin is because of its glycerin content and the vitamins, minerals and proteins imparted by the goat’s milk. Goat’s milk soap has a pH level that is closer to the skin's own pH levels than soaps made without it. Goat’s milk soap is extraordinarily gentle, and tender even to the driest of skin. Goat’s Milk contains caprylic acid which helps prevent bacterial invasions of the skin.

Alpha-hydroxy acids found in milk have rejuvenating and softening properties.

Why use goat’s milk in soap?

Goat Milk contains over 50 nutrients, including the vital vitamins of A, C, B1, B6, B12 and E, minerals, citric acid, amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids, enzymes, and a variety of other nutrients that nourish and revitalize dehydrated skin. Vitamin A slows down the effects of aging, prevents brown spots and thickening of the skin, while Zinc contributes to the reconstruction of collagen fibers, encouraging moisture retention and assisting in maintaining your skin's elasticity.

What is saponification?

Saponification literally means "soap making". The root word, "sapo", is Latin for soap. Soap making as an art has its origins as far back as 2500 - 2800 BC.

The oils used in Handmade Goat’s Milk Soap are carefully chosen for the character they impart to the final soap. Coconut oil creates lots of glycerin, makes big bubbly lather, and is very stable. Olive oil has natural antioxidants and its soap makes a creamier lather. Many other oils can be used, each one for a specific reason.

The alkali used in bar soap is sodium hydroxide. The common term for the alkali became simply "lye" which originated in the Anglo-Saxon language. Handcrafted Goat’s Milk Soap, though necessarily made with lye, has no lye in the final product. It has all been reacted with the oils to form soap and glycerin. In the cold process we utilize, saponification takes approximately six weeks.

An interesting fact about most bar soaps found in the grocery store made in mass-produced factories contains petroleum distillates instead of fats and oils. They do have a small amount of excess alkali in them. Also, it has had all of its naturally-occurring glycerin removed so it can be sold as a separate commodity. An important difference between most commercial soap and our Handmade Goat’s Milk Soap is that the glycerin is left in and thus it retains its natural moisturizing property.
